Dee,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds to me as though you are beginning to discuss two themes explored by Wilson's Pulitzer prize-winning drama The Piano Lesson. The first being the age-old concept of sibling rivalry, here embodied by the conflict between the play’s protagonist Boy Willie and his sister Berniece. The second obviously related theme is at the heart of their conflict and has to do with the ways in which we deal with the past. Boy Willie views the disposal of their family heirloom and as opportunity to a brighter future; specifically he equates landownership with success. Boy Willie insists that Berniece’s refusal to recognize their family’s past struggles and tragedies is personally damaging and has a negative effect on her daughter Maretha.
More recently you have read Wilson’s other Pulitzer prize-winning drama Fences. What themes, universal concepts or ideas, did he explore in that particular work? How might his characters and ideas connect with or relate to those in our current reading of Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart?
I look forward to reading your response and future posts.
